Wellness
A Wellness Program for Mind, Body
and Soul...
Wellness is a journey that can greatly
increase the quality of life we can enjoy. One is never
too old to begin a fitness program and the benefits at any
age are endless. Whether your goal is to build strength,
increase endurance or increase your level of independence,
fitness training will help you meet your goals. Gather with
friends at T.O.E.S. (The Oaknoll Exercise Society), relax
at yoga class, or participate in one-on-one personal training
right here at Oaknoll. Our Wellness Center is located in
the George Street building and showcases a new state-of-the-art
workout room, pool, locker room, physical and massage therapy.
Our
residents are using some of the latest in exercise equipment
to increase strength and endurance while enjoying exercise
on a daily basis: high-end treadmills that have shock absorption
to make walking easy on the joints and strength training
weight equipment as well as the residents’ favorite,
the recumbent bikes. Oaknoll’s exercise equipment
is specifically designed for the more mature exerciser.
The type of machine a resident chooses depends on the workout
they enjoy or are used to doing. The Elliptical Trainer
which allows for no impact cardiovascular exercise is similar
to running or climbing stairs. It offers less stress on
the joints while providing a full body workout.
An
exciting addition to the equipment is the NuStep, a recumbent
cross-trainer which allows your hips, knees, shoulders,
muscles and cardiovascular system to be exercised in total
comfort. It’s the “all-in-one” exerciser.
The NuStep is a complete low impact total body work out
you can do sitting down. The NuStep has a display panel
that shows your time, steps per minute, workload and heart
rate. A single touch button shows an average of how your
workout is going.
Oaknoll Wellness offers numerous activities
to enhance your mental and physical well being. All of the
wellness activities are available to Oaknoll residents,
their families, residents on the waiting list and our employees.
The Wellness Center is staffed by a full-time wellness instructor
who is certified in senior fitness. Residents may schedule
one-on-one time with our instructor who can help design
a program that will meet the health and fitness needs of
our residents.
Warm Water
Lap Pool

Our swimming pool offers a unique water
current feature which can be adjusted so a resident may
walk or swim against resistance. Water aerobic classes are
offered to those who like to get an aerobic workout and
want to use the water to reduce stress on joints and muscles.
AquaCize classes are offered every day of the week except
Sunday’s. AquaCize is a 45-minute water fitness class
designed for all levels of fitness. Our pool area also has
a hot tub and a bubble seat in the swimming pool.

Oaknoll
Walking Group
Residents who enjoy walking may join the
Oaknoll Walking Group which meets in the mornings at the
Sycamore Mall or on nice days they enjoy walking outdoors.
Our residents also take advantage of our corridors for walking
which provides safe, well-lighted, rain free walking pleasure.
Whether a resident joins the Walking Group or walks on their
own for exercise, many enjoy keeping track of their steps
with pedometers. Each year Oaknoll has a walking challenge
program—residents log their miles each day (with the
use of their Oaknoll pedometers) for eight weeks. To make
this competition a little more interesting the Oaknoll residents
challenge area businesses and their employees to see who
can log in the most miles. The challenge ends each year
with a Health Fair where vendors come in to showcase their
healthy products and active wear and bring fun gifts for
the residents
The Oaknoll
Exercise Society (T.O.E.S.), Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi
The
Oaknoll
Exercise
Society,
better known as “TOES” to our residents, is
a group-exercise class that meets three times per week at
9:30 a.m. T.O.E.S. is a thirty minute class in which exercises
are performed both seated and standing with an emphasis
on improving stretching, strengthening, range of motion
and improving balance.
Oaknoll also offers Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi to our residents
so they have choices in their exercise program and find
the technique that works best for them. Yoga, Tai Chi and
Pilates are offered at various times throughout the week.
A new and exciting class that is being offered is Boot Camp.
Boot camp is a way to improve cardiovascular and strength
training conditioning. This is an advanced class involving
interval training; two minutes of cardio followed by two
minutes of lifting. The class time is a total of 45 minutes.
Massage
Therapy
For a small fee Oaknoll is fortunate to
have a Salon and Spa which offers on-site massage therapy.
Licensed massage therapists visit Oaknoll and offer 15 minute
neck and shoulder massages and one hour full body massages.
The Oaknoll
Salon/Spa
Oaknoll’s Salon and Spa provides
full hair salon services as well as manicures and pedicures.
There is a salon located on third floor of the George Street
addition, a beauty shop on the first floor of the Oakcrest
building and a salon located in our Health Center. Our residents
have a choice of services by several professional stylists.
Our salons are available by appointment to our residents
and those on the waiting list as well as staff and family
members.
Activities
and Programs
A resident may choose to be as active as
they want to be in our community. Our residents enjoy trips
and outings, lectures, movies, holiday parties, monthly
birthday parties, live music concerts, ice cream socials,
watermelon feasts and much more! There is always something
going on in our active LifeCare community. All this fun
is organized by our full-time recreation staff members who
strive to offer a wide variety of exciting programs and
recreational activities. Oaknoll also has a partnership
with the University of Iowa in a special speaker’s
series called CLAS CHATS bringing faculty and students from
the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to Oaknoll for
informative and entertaining programs.
Included in the recreational programming
are the many committees at Oaknoll which are sponsored by
the Resident Council. Being a member of the committees at
Oaknoll gives residents the opportunity to become more involved
with the community. Committees include: Birthday, Coffee
Shop, Event Greeters, Exercise, Flower, Friendship, Health
& Safety, Gardening, Library, Memories, Newcomers, Orientation,
Picture, Programs, Recycling, Refreshments, Stitch &
Chatter and Vespers.
Great places for newcomers to meet other
residents are the Internet Café, the Coffee Shop,
Movie Theatre, and the many lounges in which groups get
together for art classes, book clubs, bible study and social
hours.

Your overall well-being is important to
us. Our programs in both Recreation and Wellness offer a
variety of stimulating choices for your health—mind,
body and soul. We hope you will decide to join our community
and take advantage of the programs we offer to keep you
young and healthy well into your retirement years.
